Description

SFXC® Sprayable Liquid Crystal Ink is a high-performance thermochromic coating that creates a vivid rainbow colour-changing effect in response to temperature.

Product Code: 1440-25C5W-SI
Internal Reference: Chiral Nematic LC 25C5W

This sprayable liquid crystal ink is based on chiral nematic (cholesteric) liquid crystal technology. At lower temperatures, the coating appears colourless. As the temperature increases through approximately 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), it transitions through a full spectrum of colour from red through green to blue.

This heat sensitive coating is ideal for interactive and temperature-responsive surfaces across design, education, research, and creative applications.

Application & Performance

Designed specifically for spray application, this liquid crystal ink delivers the most consistent and even finish when applied using an airbrush or spray system.

For best results, apply to a black background to maximise colour intensity and contrast. Avoid use on light-coloured surfaces.

  • Apply 2–3 thin coats to build colour intensity
  • Typical coverage: approx. 35 ml per m² per coat
  • Spray distance: 15–20 cm
  • Air pressure: approx. 20 psi (1.3 bar)

Coating thickness will affect the final finish, with thinner coats producing a matte texture and thicker layers creating a smoother, glossier appearance.

Protection & Compatibility

Liquid crystal coatings are sensitive and must be protected with a water-based clear topcoat to prevent damage from handling or abrasion.

Do not use solvent-based products, as these will damage the liquid crystal layer. We recommend using our Sprayable Lacquer for optimal protection.

Typical Applications

This sprayable liquid crystal ink is used in a wide range of applications including temperature visualisation, interactive surfaces, product design, packaging, education, research and development, and creative projects.

Common uses include jewellery, footwear, thermometers, thermal mapping, interior design features, and experimental design work.

Demonstration

Example Project
