Choosing the Right Liquid Crystal Sheet

For creative, educational, and interactive applications:
This liquid crystal colour changing film sheet provides a flexible, easy-to-use solution for visual temperature response.

For precision thermal mapping and controlled performance:
Our SFXC Precision-Calibrated Liquid Crystal Sheets offer defined temperature ranges, repeatable results, and engineered Color Play behaviour for engineering, laboratory, and R&D use.

Product Information

These adhesive-backed liquid crystal sheets are ideal for creative, educational, sampling, and general temperature-indication applications. They are well suited to fashion, student projects, museum displays, classroom demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and design-led work where visual temperature response is required.

For engineering, laboratory, or R&D applications requiring precision-calibrated thermal mapping, defined tolerances, and documented Colour Play parameters, see our SFXC Precision-Calibrated Liquid Crystal Sheets.

Colour Changing

Activated by temperature, liquid crystal displays a reversible colour change. As temperatures move through the selected bandwidth, colours transition smoothly from black through red, green, and blue.

This visible colour response allows quick and intuitive interpretation of temperature change across a surface.

A Smart Material

Liquid crystal is a responsive smart material that changes its optical properties when exposed to temperature. This type of RGB (red, green, blue) liquid crystal has been used for decades as a visual temperature indicator across a wide range of applications.

Application

These sheets provide a simple alternative to sprayable liquid crystal coatings, allowing the effect to be applied directly using the adhesive backing without specialist equipment.

They can be easily cut using standard tools such as scissors, knives, or guillotines, making them suitable for sampling, prototyping, demonstrations, custom displays, and general visual temperature-response applications.

Applications include educational demonstrations, museum displays, interactive exhibits, fashion concepts, design projects, visual temperature indication, and general testing or evaluation.

Specification

Available bandwidths (temperature ranges):

  • 20–25°C (68–77°F) — commonly used for sensory and interactive applications
  • 25–30°C (77–86°F) — commonly used for touch-responsive surfaces
  • 29–33°C (84.2–91.4°F) — commonly used for jewellery and visual response
  • 30–35°C (86–95°F) — suitable for general temperature visualisation
  • 35–40°C (95–104°F) — suitable for higher temperature indication
  • 35–36°C (95–96.8°F) — suitable for body-temperature response
  • Custom bandwidths — available on request

Available sizes:

  • 150 × 195 mm
  • 300 × 390 mm
  • Custom sizes — available on request
  • Colour change: RGB (red, green, blue)

Background

Liquid crystal technology was first identified by Friedrich Reinitzer in the late 19th century, helping lay the foundation for the smart thermochromic materials used today in visual temperature indication, education, and interactive applications.

Shipping & Delivery

This material is shipped worldwide using our trusted delivery partners. Orders placed before 1 pm are typically dispatched the same day where stock is available. Orders are tracked and carefully packed to help ensure they arrive in excellent condition.

Lead Times

Single sheets are usually dispatched within 2–3 working days. Larger quantities or custom requirements may be produced to order; please contact us for current lead times. Shipping times apply.

Important

These sheets change colour with temperature, not touch alone. To achieve the desired effect, ensure the correct temperature range is selected for your application.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct UV light or extreme temperatures below 0°C or above 65°C. Always test materials for suitability before full application. Read the relevant technical and safety information carefully.

Removing the adhesive after application may damage the surface or the material. Custom orders are non-refundable and non-returnable, so testing before ordering in bulk is recommended.
