Colour-Changing Autumn

This season, we’ve been inspired by nature’s own alchemy, the shifting hues of leaves as they turn from green to gold. Our latest hand-printed card, Colour-Changing Autumn, celebrates the science and beauty of transformation using our own SFXC colour-changing inks.

Just like the pigments hidden within every leaf, our inks reveal their magic in response to light, heat, and the world around them. Here’s a closer look at the wonder that inspires it all.

The Colour-Changing World of Autumn

As the wheel of the year turns and the air begins to crisp, nature performs its quiet miracle — the leaves begin to change. One by one, the greens of summer give way to the ambers, golds, and russets of autumn. A process so familiar we almost forget how magical it is.

Inside each leaf, chlorophyll, the pigment that makes them green, begins to break down as daylight shortens and temperatures fall. Hidden beneath that summer green are carotenoids and anthocyanins, the pigments of fire and fruit: yellows, oranges, and reds waiting patiently to shine. When the green fades, these secret colours emerge, glowing like stained glass in the low afternoon sun.

But it’s not only the trees that shift and shimmer with colour. Our whole world is constantly changing hue, moment by moment, depending on light, moisture, and movement. The sea outside Newhaven, for instance, can shift from slate grey to turquoise in a heartbeat. The sky, one minute pale as milk, can suddenly deepen into violet or rose. Even the chalk fields up on the hills catch different tones with each passing hour — from soft green at dawn to golden bronze by sunset.

We live in a colour-changing world. Whether it’s pigment in a leaf, minerals in the earth, or light dancing on water, colour never stands still. It reminds us that transformation is a natural rhythm, and that beauty often lies in the in-between moments, the fleeting shifts that happen while we aren’t even looking.
